SUMMARY:¡Adelante!
DESCRIPTION:¡Adelante! celebrates Latin American heritage with extraordinary music that highlights the heart\, soul\, song\, and dance of Latin America. \n\nLeonard Bernstein’s striking score from West Side Story presents the rivalry between the Sharks\, a street gang of recent Puerto Rican immigrants\, and the Jets\, White teens from New York\, and the star-crossed love of Tony and Maria. The Symphonic Dances deliver the tension\, exhilaration\, and power of Bernstein’s magical music by showcasing the most famous melodies as well as the virtuosity of the orchestral writing.\nWith an opening tribute to West Side Story\, Gabriela Lena Frank’s Three Latin American Dances tells its own story of multi-racial\, multiculturalism. Frank\, the daughter of a Peruvian-Chinese mother and a Jewish-Lithuanian father\, portrays the rhythms and dances from her beloved Perú in this piece.\nAward-winning Mexican vocalist and guitarist José García joins Riverside Philharmonic to sing some of the most famous songs from all over Latin America\, including: Álvaro Carrillo 1959 bolero “Sabor a Mí” (Mexico)\, Carlos Eleta Almarán’s “Historia de un Amor” (Panama) from the 1956 film Libertad Lamarque\, César Portillo de la Luz’s 1946 “Contigo en la Distancia” (Cuba)\, and many others.
